In 2016, leaders from the residential and business communities, local government, and leaders from faith-based organizations met to discuss the feasibility of redeveloping the Ames Memorial church site to community housing. Since then, the project’s footprint and scope has expanded. Steady progress has been made through neighborhood beatification, community engagement, acquisition of additional property through purchase and gifts, cleanup, fundraising, and partnering.
In 2024, Ames Shalom partnered with not only Dwyer Workforce Development, but HGA Architects, Seawall Development, Enterprise Community Development, and Blank Slate Development. Community feedback was crucial, listening sessions and meetings were held to discuss plans for the sites, including housing, childcare, and a community resource center.
Residents voiced strong support for the redevelopment project and emphasized the need to invest in workforce development, job creation, and local Black-owned businesses, and improve the livability of Pennsylvania Avenue and surrounding areas.
